The New Jersey Homestead Rebate Program is alive and well this year (2009) for retirees and disabled meeting certain requirements. See the linked website for more details.

The State of New Jersey has budget difficulties and it appears that those not retired or disabled may not qualify.

Many retirees and disabled are having financial difficulties and the rebate check will be a godsend to them. If you are retired or disabled check it out. If you have loved ones that could be eligible assist them in obtaining the rebate.

I was told that I could expect as much as $1200 from my rebate from my town tax collector. The money will come in handy and probably already spent.

Your state if you do not live in New Jersey may have a similar program. Your town tax collector office may be able to help you. My tax preparer just gave me a blank stare and no help when I asked about it, but yours may be more helpful. When you use the services of a professional tax preparer, they should be helpful in obtaining rebates and other town, county, state, and Federal benefits that you are eligible for or they should lose their licenses.

There is money out there if you can find out about it and are eligible. Go for it!

"The eligibility requirements and amounts for 2008 homestead rebates (to be paid in 2009) have not yet been finalized. The following information is based on the proposed State Budget (which must be adopted by July 1, 2009).

The Homestead Rebate Program provides rebates for homeowners and tenants who occupied their principal residence in New Jersey on October 1, paid property taxes on that dwelling either directly or through rent, and whose gross income for the entire year does not exceed certain limits.

Only New Jersey residents who were either homeowners or tenants on October 1, 2008, are eligible for a 2008 homestead rebate. (Provided they meet all the other requirements, those who were homeowners on October 1, 2008, will receive homeowner rebates. Those who were tenants on October 1, 2008, will receive tenant rebates.)

Rebates for Senior and/or Disabled Residents. Rebate amounts for homeowners and tenants who were age 65 or older or disabled as of December 31, 2008, will be calculated in the same manner as the 2007 homeowner and tenant rebates.

Rebates for Nonsenior and Nondisabled Residents. Under the Governor’s proposed budget, no rebates will be issued to homeowners and tenants who were under age 65 and not disabled as of December 31, 2008."
