Unethical Ethanol Tariff

Unethical Ethanol Tariff

http://www.policyinnovations.org/ideas/briefings/data/ethanol

At the heart of the issue is U.S. ethanol policy. Despite the Bush Administration's explicit support for increased U.S. ethanol consumption, the United States maintains a tariff of 54 cents per gallon for imported ethanol. This tariff limits U.S. ethanol imports and creates a higher domestic price than would otherwise result from a more open market.

COMMENT

Ethanol can be blended with gasoline to create flex fuel than can be used by most of America's cars. Ethanol is cheaper than gasoline so the blended fuels should be cheaper than 100% gasoline. The 54 cents per gallon tariff is rediculous.

With gasoline prices costing American consumers more than $4.00 per gallon, the blending of gasoline and ethanol would proved some relief in lower price than 100% gasoline.

America is trying to save oil energy by conservation, windmill towers, sunlight conversion to electricity, and many other things, it is appropriate to encourage the importation of ethanol by elliminating the 54 cent tariff on each gallon of imported ethanol.

It seems that America is slow to find viable fuels other than corn and sugar to convert to ethanol...maybe international competetition will find the solution so the world stops converting food to energy. Maybe America should stop running its cars with 100% gasoline altogether and require conversion to at least 10% or 15% ethanol blend in the near future. That would elliminate 10 to 15 % of our dependance on foreign oil pretty quickly.

What do you think? Write or call your fearless elected leaders to elliminate the 54 cent tariff on each gallon of imported ethanol. Find out what your town, county, state, and national leaders are doing for you to reduce oil demand and prices.
