Relocating to a Different State

Have you every thought about relocating to a different state in America? I started to examine it and really got confused. I checked out many of the books on retirement to a different state but they do not answer all of my questions. Basically, I do not want to jump out of the frying pan state where I live into a worse situation the fire in another state.

New Jersey has $2.549 per gallon price of home heating oil, excessive real estate taxes, employers are leaving the state, excessive financial obligations and no fair opportunities to fulfill them. Without illegal aliens, New Jersey would have had declines in population the past few years, even so we may lose at least one possibly two seats in the House of Representatives soon. Many citizens complain they cannot afford to live in New Jersey anymore and leave to live in more affordable states.

Florida seems to be the state to move to if you are really wealthy. That is not my case by a long shot. Like most Americans, I believe I am one disaster away from being at the poverty level. I heard that home insurance premiums in Florida has as much as tripled due to the recent storms. Home real estate taxes in Florida are rising rapidly too, although they are still much cheaper than New Jersey. And I do not want to replace excessive home heating costs in New Jersey with excessive cooling costs in Florida.

I want a warmer climate or at least more moderate one. I want to be near the beach. I want cheap entertainment such as minor league professional or college level sports nearby. I want to attend college courses and maybe plays and concerts there too. I want to cut my mortgage and real estate taxes at least in half or more. I want a good health plan where I do not have much out of pocket expense. I do not want to be flagged for a pre-existing medical condition where my insurer can ignor paying bills. If I ever needed it I want a free scooter, diabetic supplies, and breathing supplies like they advertise on TV. I do not want to live near a nuclear reactor or a hazardous waste dump. I want to live where I can speak to my neighbors in English. I want to be able to obtain a job if I want one. I want to be safe from harm. I want clean air and water.

William J. Clinton and the Democrats and Bush and his fellow Republicans believe in States rights and do their best to walk away from common problems in the states. They allow some seed money to be distributed among the states but the formulas usually are unfair and disproportionately go to fellow party members as some sort of political reward instead of being fair across America. The federal money is obscenely lacking to for the states to pay for federal mandates. Most major state problems are national state problems affecting all states and many are caused by mandates at the Federal level.

Everyone knows that Federal education grants across the spectrum of preschool through college has been terribly deficient for a long time. The Federal share of medicare and medicaid and social costs of illegal aliens have ripped off every state in the union. With outsourcing to foreign countries, hardly anyone is discussing the stoked up competition between states to retain existing employers and to gain new employers for their citizens. Nobody in Washington is discussing the excessive insurance premiums that are hurting our citizens. Everyone is ignoring protecting our borders and punishing the employers of millions of illegal aliens.

Some states do not have any sales taxes. Some states do not have an income tax on wages. Some states seem to have low real estate taxes. Some states seem to have affordable tuition. Some states seem to have better laws than others on health insurance. Some states like California have some wild laws about grandfathering real estate taxes while others pay the current burden.

I want to move to a state where I think my money can last the longest while obtaining some enjoyment in life. I'd like the majority of my bills to be covered by my Social Security check each month. I know that with straight line forecasting my real estate taxes in New Jersey would eat up my entire social security benefit in about 5, 6, or 7 years, which is unacceptable.

I think that the differences between the states are so sharp that one has to take out a very sharp pencil and do a pro-forma list of monthly and annual expenses to see what they total. I think that the differences are that pronounced in each state. Maybe I will need to go to a professional to review my calculations and to develop estimates five, ten, and twenty years out into the future.

I think that moving to a state should be a no-brainer. Just pick out the local weather that you want and go. But now there are so many costly differences that everyone needs to be very careful. Hopefully, the Federal government will soon pay its fair share, guard our borders, prosecute the employers of illegal aliens, go green with energy, and protect the environment, Hopefully there will be more common similarities among the states than differences.

Have you critically evaluated your President, senators, and representative for their contributions to the expenses and debt of your state? Are you looking at the roster of presidential hopefuls on how they would lead the nation and whether or not they are interested in saving our states and local governments? President George W. Bush has minimized taxing the super wealthy and placed the burden of paying for government and services squarely on the backs of the poor by cutting services and the middle class by also decreasing services and increasing their tax burden.
