Gift Pantry
Many of us have to go shopping for a gift and gift-wrap for each event that we need to bring or send a gift. It takes a lot of time and we may not find something each time suitable. Most gift occasions and the people we know we will probably give gifts can be predictable for the most part. Sometimes we just want to give a gift that is not for a special occasion but just a friendship gift, or a thank you gift, or a gift for a special person. As a child, more often than not, I would receive a small gift from relatives each time they visited my family or we visited them, in addition to presents on traditional holidays.
Many of us do take advantage of the sales after a holiday such as buying Christmas wrapping paper right after Christmas and save it for the following Christmas. But how many of us thought to take advantage of the sales after Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, and other gift holidays? Many cards are available in boxed sets such as Christmas and All Occasion. Frequently, some of the stores have sales on cards and decorations for other occasions such as birthdays, weddings, graduations, personal religious occasions such as baptisms and confirmations, house warming, and other occasions.
We keep four plastic boxes of decorations and gift-wrap. The first box contains Christmas decorations. The second box contains Christmas gift-wrap, ribbon, bows, cards, and the like. The third box contains birthday cake candles, wall decorations for a birthday, and a supply of cards for various occasions such as birthdays, St. Patrick’s Day, graduation, thank you, sympathy, and others. And the fourth box contains gift-wrap for all occasions other than Christmas. Right now we only have to run out for individual occasions about 10% of the time because what we need is missing from the supply or not what we really want at the time.
For gifts, we try to make a list of everyone that we intend or should give a gift to for that year. Across the top of the page we try to list each occasion that we may want to give a gift. Then we put checkmarks next to each person’s name for each occasion that we want to give a gift. Your children will have more checkmarks next to their names than the mail delivery person who you may only give a Christmas gift to. The chart is easier the next year because you only have to add names and checkmarks of additional people you want to give gifts to and cross off the names of people you no longer want to give gifts to. Then we make a list of each gift occasion and the people and then we try to think of an appropriate gift. This is easier than it may seem because some people will always get money and maybe an appropriate token gift each time and others may require some real thought such as a spouse. My family was really into fairness with children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. All of us pretty much got equivalent things as boys or girls each time. Other groups such as teachers, mail person, and school crossing guard can get the same things. Finally, you can consolidate the list and maybe prioritize certain items you may need first.
Building the inventory in your gift pantry, you can always store some items in quantity. If there are a lot of young children puzzles and learning toys may be appropriate. Dolls may be good
presents for girls. Older girls would like bags, journals, headbands, a baton and other things made for girls. Older children might like a chess set. An avid fisherman or golfer might like a fishing or golf themed item. Animal figurine collectors might want another. Women of all ages like costume jewelry. Religious people or occasions may call for guardian angel figurines or other religious themed items. Boys like Merlin, dragon, and old western themed items. Men like tools and luggage. Women always like kitchen and bath accessories. All women should get a spa gift. Picture frames with pictures and candles are appropriate anytime.
