Cheney Is Ordered to Preserve Records

Cheney Is Ordered to Preserve Records

Nothing is more exasperating to the American public when public officials keep secrets on issues not regarding national security. The secrecy of President Bush and Vice President Cheney on issues not national security are legendary among other presidents and vice presidents. In fact, Bush and Cheney wanted to destroy records and brought the issue to court and lost.

Good for the court. Good for the American public. Good for "the other defendants include the National Archives and the archivist of the United States". Good for "a private group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is suing Mr. Cheney and the Executive Office of the President to ensure that no presidential records are destroyed or handled in a way that makes them unavailable to the public".

Most Americans believed that Bush and Cheney acted irresponsibly on many issues especially with the secret meetings with oil industry executives. The article did not set a date when the papers would be available at least to scholars and the press so that the facts can be examined. Hopefully disclosure can be made within the lifetimes of Bush and Cheney so that they can be confronted with any wrongdoing or apologies if no wrongdoings are found.

It seems that Bush and Cheney are corrupt while they have been so adamant to hide the documents and to go to court trying to destroy the documents. If they were honorable why not disclose from the beginning?

The Bush administration seems too litigious trying to prevent White house staffers from testifying before Congress including Harriet Miers, Carl Rove, and Joshua Bolten, the White House chief of staff. Americans love open information and dislikes hidden facts.

One must think about any legal precedent set if the Bush administration gets away with all of the secrecy to future Presidential administrations that they too may be able to keep secrets and hide things also from the public on issues not in volving national security.
