Save 66% On Home Electric Bill

Australia to ban old-style light bulbs, go fluorescent to reduce greenhouse emissions

SYDNEY, Australia: Australia is switching off the lights to help the environment.
The federal government on Tuesday announced a plan to phase out incandescent light bulbs and replace them with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs across the country — a move that Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull said was a world's first.
In fact, Australia is not the first country to make the switch to energy-efficient lighting. Cuba's Fidel Castro launched a similar program two years ago which later inspired close friend and ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to launch his own light bulb giveaway scheme.
Legislation to gradually restrict the sale of the old-style bulbs could reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tons by 2012 and cut household power bills by up to 66 percent, Turnbull said.

COMMENT

Just changing from the old fashioned incandescent bulb to the newer energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb can save you up to 66% on your home electric bill. It could also save additionally if the government (city, state, and federal) would mandate it in America also. And it could have more savings if business would also make the effort.

It is a no-brainer. I guess it is too tough of a concept for national, state, and local leaders to come up with. It would not only save greenhouse gas emissions, but also slow down the need for additional power plants, and reduce our requirement for oil and gas to fuel those power plants.

I have a couple of energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs already in use at my home and will make an effort to replace more of my old fashioned incandescent bulbs right away. I always look for ideas to reduce my bills.
