Salmonella-hit peanut company files for bankruptcy

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Peanut Corporation of America sought bankruptcy protection on Friday after a salmonella outbreak traced to one of its plants led to one of the biggest product recalls in U.S. history.

The company filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia, saying the negative economic effects of the recalls have been "extremely devastating" to its financial condition."

"The salmonella outbreak that has sickened 600 people, more than half of them children, and may have killed nine people, has been traced to a plant in Blakely, Georgia operated by Peanut Corporation."

"Federal Bureau of Investigation officials in Atlanta and Virginia said earlier this week they had joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in a criminal investigation of the company.

Inspections showed the company not only had several tests that showed salmonella contamination, but also cockroaches, a leaky roof and filthy equipment, the FDA has said."

COMMENTS

Was the FDA hiding? Where were they all of this time when they should have been inspecting the plant and taking samples of the peanut products to check for bacteria and other nasty thing. They were asleep on the job. The FDA people that should have managed the inspection of the plant should all be fired and they should forfeit their pensions. Maybe President Obama should hire somebody that can get the job done. This was inexcusable for the FDA to have this happen.

Where was the local health department, also. Did not the factory need a health certificate in order to operate. Was there not even county or state health departments enforcing site checkups and biological sampling at food businesses such as Peanut Corporation of America.

If there is no inspection required for Georgia food businesses, I do not think I want to go there and eat there anymore. Maybe I should check labels at my supermarket and discard other products from Georgia. Maybe a boycott of all Georgia products is called for. Boycott all Georgia food products!

What excuse does the Governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, have to say about poisoning Americans across the country? Sonny Perdue, earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1971 from the University of Georgia and knows all about bacteria, germs and other nasties. What is he going to do to promote the health of Americans with food products from Georgia? Really, how far behind is Georgia from other states in the country in public health including the inspection of food preparation businesses?
