Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc.

Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc.

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc. is an all-volunteer no-fee emergency medical service in the town and local vicinity of Westfield, New Jersey. They respond to emergency calls with ambulances and highly trained volunteers to our homes and businesses 24 hours each day, 52 weeks out of the year. The EMT's volunteered 26,708 hours last year, responded to 2170 calls, and responded with mutual aid to 52 requests from neighboring towns of Scotch Plains, Clark, Mountainside, and Garwood. They do not and have never charged for their emergency services.

They are having their fundraising at this time to pay for the ambulances, equipment, and training.

I sent them a check with a few more dollars than I have sent in other years because I want them to continue to succeed and remain a vibrant organization in the future. The alternatives are funding the rescue squad out of the municipal budget or enabling a private for profit rescue squad either of which would cost much more and probably with lower quality. With high real estate taxes already, the cost of municipal rescue would be prohibitive. And private rescue is very expensive for each incident to the family of the sick or injured when the bill arrives. I've seen bills from private rescue services as big as hospital emergency room bills. Just think if a patient requires time consuming efforts before transport, an IV, oxygen, medicines, and other costly services and materials, beyond the basic wages and benefits of two attendants and the cost of wear and tear on the ambulance.

Continue to donate to your rescue squad. Donate for the first time this year if you never donated before. If you manage a business in town find out what you can donate from your employer and send it in. If you belong to a club or other organization, take up a collection and send it in. Principals and teachers collect pennies and make a civics project out of it...the Squad may be able to appear at your school and show off some of their equipment. If you think you cannot send in a donation, at least send in a dollar. It all adds up. If you can send in an extra five dollars or more, do it.

Some years, not enough money is collected and they have to have another fundraiser later in the year. Send in enough now so they do not have the expense of printing and mailing a second fundraiser later this year. Show them we support them.

If you do not live or work in Westfield, New Jersey, then make a generous donation to your local volunteer rescue squad. We must applaud the efforts of all volunteer rescue squads across the country and the people that support them with financial donations.
