Cut PSEG Electric Usage 50%

Cut PSEG Electric Usage 50%

Our PSEG electric bill has a comparison chart of the monthly consumption used for the recent few months versus the same months the previous year.

Guess what? We reduced our consumption from about 600 to about 300 for this past April 2008 versus April 2007.

The bill was still $57 dollars and change. I think PSEG had a rate increase and the rate per kilowatt hour will continue to increase in the future so nobody should rest on any success they have had on reducing their consumption of electric energy.

I think the bulk of the credit reducing electric consumption in the house was replacing old light bulb technology with the newer energy efficient light bulbs. Many rooms have 3 bulb ceiling light fixtures. Many rooms have more than one table lamp. Our unfinished basement and attic have many bulb fixtures each. The kitchen has ten ceiling light fixtures. We also have several outdoor fixtures some with multiple bulbs.

This past weekend we attended a major "green" event, the PSEG Global Green Expo at the site of the old Jersey Central Railroad station at Liberty State Park on the Hudson River just across New York City. I saw Ted Danson who talked about Oceanic, an organization he supports. Ted is taller than I imagined, thin, and well groomed. He should sponsor a clothing line for men and write an autobiography. I also saw and heard another conservationist Mrs Imus the wife of Imus in the Morning radio and TV star. Senator Melendez spoke before and introduced Ted Danson. There were several other speeches that day and several tents with children's hands on "green" demonstrations. There were booths for almost 100 green groups.

The expo was tiring but well worth it. PSEG gave away free energy efficient light bulbs to attendees. Someone also gave away tree saplings to transplant at home. There were many other giveaways and handouts.

We are installing today 6 more energy efficient light bulbs in the house today and expect our energy consumption to be reduced for May 2008. And we expect it to go up during the hot months with fan and window air conditioning use but not as much as last year. No later than September 2008 we will have all light fixtures containing energy efficient light bulbs.

Right now our only problem is between 3 or 4 dozen old fashioned light bulbs some never used and some used that is in a cabinet in the kitchen. What do people do with the old fashioned light bulbs? Maybe we can get rid of them during a garage sale this summer.

Switch to energy efficient light bulbs because it really can save you meaningful dollars each month on your electric bill.
