Oil Substitutes

Oil Substitutes

We all have heard about economic substitutes. When the price of butter is high, we can by margarine. If we cannot afford a Cadillac, maybe we can afford a Buick or Chevrolet. If we cannot afford a wool sweater, maybe we can purchase one made of a synthetic fabric.

Now we have a big problem with gasoline, deisel, and home heating oil. But we do not have any substitutes of major value. In New Jersey, there is amost no blended fuel available to purchase, such as a blend of gasoline and ethanol. I found that my local Hess station in Garwood, New Jersey was selling a blend of 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol and was surprised. I'd like to know what was used to make the ethanol, such as corn or sugar. I assumed that New Jersey was not getting any corn ethanol because it was too costly to ship. The last time I checked, Hess did not have any refineries in America, and shipped gasoline(blend) to America from the carribean. I'll take ethanol blend where I can get it.

Some people are converting food oil to diesel but I do not know of any in New Jersey.

South Africa and the American Air Force is promoting synthetic jet fuel made from a coal blended with oil. It looks promising and south Africa is geared up for it but it may take the Air Force 3 or more years to start obtaining synthetic oil from coal in millions of gallons per year, but it will take several times the investment to possibly convert major commercial airlines to the fuel. Maybe this is a project that should be escaladed.

A lot of businesses and government agencies are buying small fleets of plug electric cars to test them out. Deliveries are expected within the next two years.

A lot of things on small scale are being accomplished to reduce the demand of foreign oil which is encouraging. But there is not much being accomplished on bigger scales. The great Unleader, George Bush is leading the American middle class to ruin with high oil prices and food prices. We know he is a free marketer but a lot of things cannot be accomplished small scale without the encouragement of the Federal government.

Ask your elected officials what they are proposing to solve the energy problem. The dumb asses will do nothing unless they are pushed by all of us.
