You may not have been paying attention in school when subjects like home economics and keeping a budget came up, but it's never too late to learn.

During good times most people paid others to do things for them that usually they could do themselves. During bad times, like the current Bush and Republican depression, most of us are striving to do for ourselves rather than paying others.

This list of ten skills was authored by Melinda Fulmer and most of us can save money by doing some of her ideas. We each probably have other ideas for ourselves.

Here are my comments on the items in her list: I probably will make a better effort to buy clothes where they gave away free alterations. I already made an effort to create a frugal budget I log on at least twice each week to balance my checkbook. In my area of New Jersey, Campbell's condensed tomato soup is 85 cents per can and the prices of their other condensed soup are outrageous. We are making a strong effort to prepare home made soups in advance and bulk to replace the Campbell's condensed soups that we once bought at much cheaper prices. Nice knowing you Campbells. We need to do a better job comparison shopping at the grocery. We are casual wear right now and have not been to the dry cleaner in years. We do our best cleaning during each quarterly cleaning but are weak during daily and weekly cleaning chores. We try to paint rooms every few years, but do not have any furniture that could be painted. We use our microwave a lot to heat beverages, defrost things, and reheat items but rely on the gas oven for the bulk of the baking. We really do not have many filters to replace. There is no chance that I will pay someone to develop a resume for me.

Below is the list of 10 skills of Melinda Fulmer:

1. Make minor sewing repairs or alterations

2. Craft a household budget and balance a checkbook

3. Make Soup

4. Comparison shop at the grocery store

5. Take care of your own wardrobe

6. Clean your house with vinegar and baking soda

7. Bake in the microwave

8. Apply paint

9. Replace filters and screens in your house

10. Put together a résumé
